Two certificate courses in sugarcane agriculture are held each year. The junior course is of three weeks duration and is offered twice each year, usually in March and November. The minimum entry requirement is Std 10 (Grade 12). Students who wish to enroll for the course and who have passed Std 8 (Grade 10) may be allowed access, following an assessment and interview.
The senior course of five weeks duration is held once or twice each year, usually in February and June, numbers permitting. The minimum entry requirement is some tertiary education. Students who wish to enroll for the course and who have passed Std 10 (Grade 12) may be allowed access, following an assessment and interview. A student who has a matric (Grade 12) and has passed the Junior Certificate course with a Merit Pass (65% and above) will be entitled to enroll for the Senior Certificate course.
The courses includes subjects on Soils, Varieties, Pests & Diseases, Husbandry, Environmental Management, Land Use Planning, Harvesting, Weed Control, Mechanisation, Irrigation and Farm Management. Since the courses are delivered in English and all assessment is carried out in English, students must be able to read and write English.
