SPECIALIST INSTRUMENTATION and EQUIPMENT SUPPORT

We have two vacancies in our specialist workshop, in the Breeding & Field Resource Unit based at Mount Edgecombe. One has a more electronic focus, the other a strong mechanisation focus. Please see the details below. Depending on the skills and experience of our applicants, one applicant will assume the role of Supervisor with overall responsibility for the workshop.

MECHANISATION TECHNICIAN
The incumbent will be responsible for the supervision of the design, construction and repair of specialised equipment.

Some of the responsibilities of this position include:

· Designing and building equipment for research projects that cannot be purchased commercially.
· Supervising the repair, maintenance and modification of existing equipment.
· Advising researchers on appropriate engineering practices.
· Supervising the Mechanisation employees ensuring high quality applications for all projects in the Mechanisation Workshop.
· Responsibility for the ordering of tools, equipment and the control of the Workshop budget.

The ideal applicant should have:

· A Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
· 4 years experience in design and construction of specialised equipment with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
· Computer literacy in MS Excel and Word
· A drivers licence
· Knowledge of Occupations Health and Safety is essential.

SPECIALIST INSTRUMENTATION
This incumbent will support agricultural research by enabling the correct use of specialised instrumentation to monitor the soil-crop-atmosphere system. The job entails:

· Maintenance, calibration, installation, programming and operation of specialized research equipment such as photosynthesis meters, soil water meters, solar radiation sensors, load cells and data loggers.    

· Development of prototypes to monitor crop responses to environmental factors.

· Training and assistance to Crop Scientists and Technical Assistants in the correct operation of this instrumentation.

The incumbent should preferably have a Degree in Electronic Engineering or Science (Physics), with some experience with electronic instrumentation, programming embedded controllers and database management.  The incumbent should be fully computer literate (MS Excel, Access, C). A driver's license is essential.
