SA Sugarcane Research Institute: Modeller: Post-Doctoral Fellow

MODELLING STRATEGIES FOR RESOURCE-USE OPTIMISATION  AND VARIETY IMPROVEMENT

• The Context
The South African Sugarcane Research Institute (SASRI), located near the Indian Ocean resort of Umhlanga Rocks in KwaZulu-Natal, is a private institute that is funded entirely by the sugar industry. The Institute conducts research and provides services to advance nutritional, agronomic and engineering practices and pest and disease control measures. The Institute also continually develops superior sugarcane varieties that provide increased economic returns for all sectors of the industry.

• The Project
The Post-Doctoral Fellow will provide essential modelling expertise to a well-defined cluster of strategically-important projects that spans resource optimisation and variety improvement. The nature of these projects reflects SASRI's focus on excellence in trans-disciplinary and systems research. As a result, the incumbent will have an opportunity to work closely with specialists in agronomy, breeding, crop nutrition, entomology, extension, molecular biology, pathology and soil science.

• The Candidate
The ideal candidate must hold a PhD degree with a strong focus on crop modelling and plant- or crop-physiology. Computer programming skills are essential, while experience with DSSAT software will be an asset. Due to the trans-disciplinary and team-orientated nature of the research, an ability to get on with others is essential.

• The Position
The successful candidate will be provided with a competitive fellowship stipend and a dynamic, well-resourced and friendly working environment. The Post-Doctoral Fellow will have the option to reside in one of the fully-serviced and comfortable on-site residences.
