Formulate control tactics to combat sugarcane thrips, Fulmekiola serrate (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), a recent incursion into the South African sugarcane industry. Research Topics are: (1) monitoring thrips (2) yield loss (3) thrips/crop phenology (4) model development (5) varietal resistance.

Monitor infestations of the key stalk borer pest in this industry namely, Eldana saccharina (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae).

Maintain a satellite collection of injurious arthropods attacking the crop, and provide pertinent information to industry stakeholders.

Monitor arthropod biosecurity in this industry, emphasizing the risk from Chilo sacchariphagus (Lepidoptera: Crambidae): a key sugar pest in Mozambique.
